Both the Centre and the State government has granted Rs 703.29 crore to initiate 18 CETPs with ZLD systems in Tiruppur.

With approximately 73,000 MT of mixed salt having been amassed in the Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs) in Tiruppur, it was announced by the Tamil Nadu government that research activities would be carried out to dispose of the waste originating from the textile processing industry. This decision came in spite of the fact that both the Centre and the State had approved Rs 703 crore for the construction of 18 additional CETPs.

In accordance with this, it was revealed that the State government was giving attention to the establishment of CETPs equipped with ‘Zero Liquid Discharge’ (ZLD) capabilities and other advanced technologies within textile clusters. The aim was to combat pollution and ensure an ecologically sound and unpolluted surroundings.

Both the Centre and the State government has granted Rs 703.29 crore to initiate 18 CETPs with ZLD systems in Tiruppur, as well as the enhancement of existing CETPs. This initiative would contribute significantly to the district’s knitwear and garment industry and overall economic advancement by promoting sustainable production and continuous employment prospects.

An approximate accumulation of 73,000 MT of mixed waste salt within the CETPs’ premises posed substantial threats to health and the environment. Therefore, it was imperative to address this issue without delay. The official emphasized the necessity of promptly implementing an advanced and cost-effective waste treatment system. He disclosed that a scientific committee had been formed to select the technology provider for eliminating both the concurrent reject and the accumulated mixed hazardous salts within the CETPs. The official stated that the panel had engaged in various discussions and was currently in the process of finalizing the appropriate technology.

The committee would also establish Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the establishment of new CETPs and the cost-effective operation and maintenance of existing ones.
