Tiruppur, Chennai
Despite being prepared for the second wave of the
Covid 19 pandemic, the textile sector in Tamil Nadu has been adversely
affected, especially when the export demand was high. Further, the textile hubs
of Tiruppur and Coimbatore are worst affected.
According to Prabhu Damodharan, Convenor, Indian
Texpreneurs Federation, Tiruppur has announced a complete lockdown of the units
while the export units in the outskirts are still trying to operate with
minimal staff. The units are following government protocols in the hope that
the short-term pain will pave the way for long-term gains. He also said that
the markets are experiencing a demand boom and the industry has informed the
buyers that the lockdown is short-termed. Some big players have retained their
migrant labourers; providing them with accommodation. They plan to get the
workers vaccinated as well.
According to A Sakthivel, Chairman, Apparel
Export Promotion Council (AEPC), the infections in Tiruppur has increased but the exporters have taken the
required measures to execute the orders. He also said that around 95% of
workers have stayed back and are following protective measures. The association
has also informed the parties about the short-term disruption in the workflow.
