textile store owners have asked the government to allow them to operate for few
hours on a daily basis so that they can come out of their financial problems. The
owners and employees from the textile sector gathered at Vilakkuthoon to stage
a demonstration. The police had to come and remind them of the Covid-9 restrictions. These store owners said
that the stores have been closed for two months now. The government has allowed
some relaxation to public transportation but no relaxation has been given to
these stores even when the cases have come down.
The store owners
are facing financial issues as they have to pay wages to their employees and
rents of the shops. They said that they will fall into debt if the stores are
not opened soon. According to AVS Britto of Madurai Textile Association,
interest on heavy debts, rent, and electricity bills need to be paid but the
stores are not in a position to do that. The stores should be opened for few
hours or on alternate days, he said.
