For long Indian textile and apparel industry has played a very important role in India’s socio-economic condition. It provides second highest employment after agriculture. It engages more than 45 million personnel directly, constitute 7 per cent of the industrial output of India and around 2.5 per cent of Indian GDP.  Its market size is expected to reach $350 billion by 2030. The Indian textile and apparel industry depends heavily on export of their products to different parts of the world; hence the geo-political condition of the world can influence the bottom line of this industry.

India has signed preferential trading agreements with a large number of countries including Australia, New Zealand, Mauritius, UAE, Oman, EFTA block and recently with UK, European Union. It is in the process of signing FTA with USA. We know that these countries are important for Textile and Apparel industry. Besides Government of India introduced various schemes for betterment of industry including attraction of FDIs in this industry. Also, we are experiencing some political disturbance in various parts of the world.

TANTU, the alumni association of two oldest textile institutes in West Bengal, is going to organize a seminar on this topic on 22nd November 2026 at IIT Delhi to discuss on these issues amongst the stake holders. The speakers will include from representatives from industry associations such as CITI, CII, PHDCC etc., export promotion councils, government agencies, textile and apparel industries. At the end we will be able to chalk out our future steps for overall improvement of our industry.

The seminar will be attended by practicing industry personnel, policy makers, budding technicians, export promotion council representatives etc. We request industry personnel, researchers, economists, educationists, government agencies etc. to participate as delegates and help by sponsoring parts of the event.
