The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) is planning to set up 7 to 8 khadi centres in Meghalaya this year, said the organisation’s Chairman Vinay Kumar Saxena. Each centre’s estimated cost is Rs 9 lakh and the annual production is likely to be around Rs 16 to Rs 17 lakh. They are also expected to provide employment to locals.
The chairman of KVIC added that State’s khadi activities were not up to the mark. The required attention was not given to khadi in the last 20 years in spite of the fact that the industry has the potential to generate employment for the people of Meghalaya.
KVIC is charged with the planning, promotion, organisation and implementation of programmes for the development of khadi and other village industries in the rural areas in coordination with other agencies engaged in rural development wherever necessary.
