India’s handicraft exports have increased by more than 8 per cent during the last fiscal, touching nearly Rs 31,000 crore, revealed Textiles Minister Smriti Irani in the Lok Sabha. “According to the provisional data available, the exports of handicrafts have shown an increase of Rs 2,414.79 crore from Rs 28,524.48 crore to Rs 30,939.27 crore — an increase of 8.46 per cent in rupees term in 2015-16 as compared to previous year,” she said.

Smriti Irani has announced the launch of a national helpline for weavers that would also be a census of concerned workmen. She made the announcement at the second National Handloom Day celebrations at Banaras Hindu University. The helpline, to be headquartered at the Ministry of Textiles, will enable weavers to lodge complaints with the minister directly and also give suggestions for development of the handloom sector.
The number of UK companies manufacturing textiles and apparel rose sharply last year, according to a new report of the UK Fashion and Textiles Association (UKFT). confirming the growing momentum of ‘Made in Britain’ movement. The number of firms producing textiles and apparel rose to 7,880, a 7.6 per cent increase from previous year. The biggest increase came from a rise in the number of apparel manufacturers, up 10.7 per cent to 3,830 companies, while the number of textile firms had increased by 4.9 per cent year on year to touch 4,030.
