Rajinder Gupta, Chairman Emeritus of Trident Group, has been elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Punjab, recognising his decades-long contribution to industrial growth, employment generation, and social development.
A first-generation entrepreneur, Gupta founded Trident in the mid-1980s and grew it into a $2 billion global enterprise with over 17,500 employees and exports to more than 100 countries. Under his leadership, Trident has become a leading integrated manufacturer in home textiles and paper, with operations in India and offices in the UK, USA, and Dubai.
Gupta’s entry into the Rajya Sabha is expected to benefit Punjab across agriculture, industrial development, and skill-building initiatives, while giving renewed momentum to India’s textile sector. “Business is my occupation, but creating opportunities is my passion. This new role allows me to work for Punjab’s progress and strengthen India’s position as a global textile powerhouse,” he said.
His philanthropic initiatives through the Trident Foundation have advanced education, healthcare, and skill development across Punjab and Madhya Pradesh. Recognised with the Padma Shri (2007) and multiple entrepreneurship awards, Gupta exemplifies ethical leadership, financial integrity, and nation-building.
He has also served in several institutional and public roles, including Vice Chairman of Punjab’s State Economic Policy and Planning Board, Chairman of Punjab Engineering College and Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University, and leadership positions with FICCI, CII, and the Cleveland Clinic International Leadership Board.
