India’s textile exports dip slightly but showcase broad market resilience

Exports edge down 1.8% amid steady demand across major markets.

India’s textile and apparel exports posted a slight decline in the first seven months of the fiscal but continued to demonstrate broad-based stability across major global markets, according to the Ministry of Textiles. The Ministry reported that combined exports of textiles, apparel and handicrafts reached US$ 20,401.95 million during April–October 2025, a marginal fall of 1.8% from US$ 20,728.05 million in the same period last year. Officials noted that the modest dip must be viewed against persistent tariff-related pressures and other external headwinds affecting global trade.

Despite these challenges, India registered export growth in more than 100 countries compared to the previous year. Key destinations that showed improved demand included the UAE, the U.K., Germany, Spain, France, Italy, China, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Japan. The Ministry said this momentum highlights the industry’s ability to diversify markets and sustain competitiveness through product innovation and supply-chain adaptation.

A Ministry spokesperson said the effect of reciprocal tariffs on India’s global textile shipments would vary depending on product differentiation, demand conditions, quality standards and existing contractual structures. The Ministry is maintaining continuous dialogue with exporters, particularly MSMEs, to understand evolving concerns around U.S. tariff measures and other barriers affecting outbound shipments.

To support the sector, the Government is pursuing multiple schemes aimed at improving efficiency, boosting value addition and strengthening market access. These include initiatives to upgrade infrastructure, encourage sustainable manufacturing, enhance product quality and expand export opportunities. The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to assisting exporters in navigating global uncertainties while positioning India as a reliable sourcing destination for textiles and apparel.
