Exporters demand removal of import duty on cotton
An appeal has been launched by the Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council to the Union Textile Minister, Piyush Goyal regarding the removal of the customs duty on cotton.

Textiles Export Promotion Council has made an appeal to the Union Textile
Minister, Piyush Goyal regarding the removal of the customs duty on cotton. The
issue was discussed by the Chairman of the Council, Manoj Patodia, Vice
Chairman, Sunil Patwari, and Executive Director, Siddhartha Rajagopal in a meeting.
According to the data, exports of cotton textiles during 2020-2021 were $10,723
million which means that growth of 9.43% was recorded as compared to the same
data collected in 2019-2020.
It was pointed by Patodia that there is a need for the industry to
have cotton at international prices and also to promote exports of value-added
products. He also said that there is also a need to modify RODTEP rates at the
earliest and RoSCTL rates should be maintained for made-ups under the
respective scheme.
The council has also urged the minister to include the clothing and
textile sector upfront in the pre-negotiation scoping phase†or to start an
“early harvest†program so that the disadvantages due to duty concessions faced
by exporters can be overcome.
