The major technological advancements associated with the First Industrial Revolution – that lasted from the mid-18th century to about 1830 – were concerned with textile manufacturing, especially spinning. John Kay’s invention of flying shuttle, which enabled wider cloth to be woven faster, in 1767 marked the beginning of modernisation (or automation) in the textile industry.

Talks of bad times are spreading fast, sometime even on a global scale. No country is spared. But time and again global economy has come out of the blues, and some countries’ fortunes have even brightened up. Why not India’s, this time? One of the opportunities for the textile industry is the technical textiles.

The Swiss Textile Machinery Association is the representative body for Switzerland’s producers of textile equipment, systems and services. Currently 44 companies are affiliated, including manufacturers of machines and components, and service providers, for the textile industry.

Chemical change management should touch the issues surrounding it right from the roots because resource consumption and risk reduction are important for the textile value chain. Realising this, Bluesign, which was founded in 2000, has been making rapid strides towards managing chemicals in textile industry.
