After a successful second edition in Mumbai, the Crafts Council of Karnataka is hosting the 3rd edition of its annual handicrafts / handloom textile and jewellery exhibition, Vastrabharana. In preparation for the upcoming festive season, the exhibition will display an array of handloom textile and jewellery designs such as Ajrakh, Bandhini, Benaras, Chanderi, Kalamkari, Kashmiri, Phulkari, Gotapatti, and Jamdani among others. Handicrafts and jewellery from around 45 weavers and artisans across India will be up for sale at the three days exhibition at South Mumbai.
Vastrabharana 2019 will be held at the Coomaraswamy Hall at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Vastu Sangrahalaya from September 24th to 26th from 10:30 am to 7:30 pm.
The Crafts Council of Karnataka is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the development and sustainability of traditional arts and crafts. It is affiliated to Crafts Council of India and World Craft Council. In addition to bridging the gap between traditional artisans and the market, the council provides them with a platform to enhance their technical knowhow and skills. They provide the artisans, designers and weavers with education and training on dealing with contemporary buyers through design intervention, product development and market access. Through the exhibition, the Crafts Council of Karnataka aims to provide the artisans a platform to display their products and create a sustainable livelihood for them.
Padmaja Sakhamuri, Convener for this year’s Vastrabharana said, “We are delighted to return to Mumbai with our exhibition for the third time. Our last two editions received tremendous response and we look forward to welcoming a higher number of lovers of Indian arts and crafts this year too. The Crafts Council of Karnataka encourages artisans and weavers from across the country to participate in Vastrabharana and work towards keeping the age old art alive through their efforts.â€Â
The exhibition will see artisans and designers from every state of the country and give them an opportunity to make their products available to customers and buyers in Mumbai. Some of the weavers and artisans that are participating in Vastrabharana 2019 are Punarjeevana from North Karnataka, Vankar Bhimji Kanji from Kutch, Aribo from Andhra Pradesh, BhanuSrichandra from Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu, Vani Vritti Design Studio from a tribal community in Odisha, Mangala Arts from Rajasthan and many others.
Hema Malini, well-known actress and Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha will grace the inauguration ceremony of the exhibition on the first day, Tues. 24th September at 11 a.m.
