Vice President CP Radhakrishnan has affirmed that India’s textile and industrial sectors shall achieve substantial expansion following the lowering of US tax to 18 per cent and the free trade pact with European nations. During his inaugural address at the opening of the new academic block at the Indian Institute of Handloom Technology in Salem, Radhakrishnan noted Salem’s fame for mangoes and its notable handloom weaving industry, lauded the efforts of weavers, and stressed the importance of protecting traditional weaving heritage. The Vice President stated that the Central Government has been making attempts to advance the textile industry and observed that the recent agreement with European countries will create new prospects for India’s textile sector, allowing it to rival China and Bangladesh.

Lauding Prime Minister Modi’s initiatives, including the Smart City project, he remarked that several cities in Tamil Nadu have profited from the projects. He voiced confidence that the government’s programs will trigger major growth in the textile industry and uplift the lives of weavers. He advised the textile industry to leverage the institute’s resources and suggested that the Central Government be consulted to improve Salem College’s facilities. The Vice President declared that the Union Government is adopting various measures to aid in upgrading the skills of the weavers to meet global standards, underscored the need for weavers to refine their skills and match global expectations, noting the Central Government is taking action to assist this transformation.
