Textile ministry plans strategy to meet global sustainability goals
The draft aims to prepare India’s textile ecosystem to meet global market demands while ensuring resource efficiency and environmental sustainability.
The Ministry of Textiles has released a draft vision document titled Roadmap 2047, which outlines its long-term goals for establishing a sustainable, circular, and resource-efficient textile industry in India. The draft highlights the Ministry’s commitment to transforming the sector in alignment with global sustainability standards and the country’s broader development objectives.
The roadmap focuses on building awareness across the entire textile value chain, encompassing large industrial players, MSMEs, consumers, and students. It stresses the importance of capacity building, increased investment in research and development, innovation, and the sharing of industry knowledge.
A significant aspect of the strategy involves aligning Indian textile policies with evolving global expectations. This includes prioritising environmental, social, and governance (ESG) compliance, promoting green finance, and encouraging responsible production and consumption practices.
The draft aims to prepare India’s textile ecosystem to meet global market demands while ensuring resource efficiency and environmental sustainability. Through this initiative, the Ministry intends to position India as a global leader in sustainable textiles by 2047, the centenary year of India’s independence.
The Ministry plans to seek stakeholder consultations and feedback before finalising the roadmap, which is expected to serve as a strategic guide for the sector’s transformation over the next two decades.
