The monthly Index of Industrial Production for textiles increased 7.8 per cent in August this year compared with the same month last year. The cumulative index for textiles from April to August this year has also gone up marginally — 1.1 per cent — from a year earlier.

The Indian Textile Engineering Industry (TEI) is more than 100 years old with an illustrious history of achievements, including manufacture of advanced spinning machinery, power looms, weaving preparatory machines, finishing and dyeing machines, etc. It has also made a mark in the world specially in the field of export of accessories which amount to nearly two-third of last year?s export of about Rs 2,600 crore.

The Indian textile industry should cheer up now. Though the modalities of how the Rs 6,000-crore bonanza, announced by the Modi Government for the textile industry, will take shape, there are enough hints that in a very few months, proper steps will be revealed. Murmurs of dissatisfaction are fading away, and the Amended Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (TUFs) seems to have got the nod of approval from the industry.

The predominantly cotton based textile industry has been producing almost 75 per cent of the spun yarn from cotton and therefore, this industry has been subjected to crisis due to volatility in the prices.

Industrial sector consumes the highest power in India – about 49 percent of the total energy production in the country. Textile industry consumes the third highest energy in India.
