Bangladesh apparel makers hesitant about new accord

Bangladesh

As per the records, the apparel manufacturers in Bangladesh have shown their hesitation about the recent developments that have been made in the new and improved Accord International. As per the statement passed by the Accord Foundation, the new agreement is named as the "International Accord for Health and Safety in the Textile and Garment Industry. This agreement will be signed between the international labour organizations and the brands.

A recent meeting was conducted in which the members of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) expressed their inhibitions, confusions, and anxiety about this new accord. As per Faruque Hassan, President, BGMEA, the press release by the Accord Foundation is confusing and reflects poor partnership. He also said that the press release was undermining an independent organisation. he further quoted that it is misleading information that the International Accord agreement is being implemented in Bangladesh by the independent national tri-partite RMG Sustainability Council (RSC).

The BGMEA president also stated that for the continued safety it is important that the duty of compliance should be ensured. He added that the industry has zero-tolerance for backsliding on matters related to safety. He said that the RSC is trying to overcome such issues.
