Bangladesh’s
apparel industry has taken advantage of the grave Covid situation in India and
the military coup in Myanmar. The
apparel export orders from these countries have been shifted to Bangladesh now. According to economists, in recent months,
problems related to labour and logistics have emerged in both these countries,
so the garment manufacturing units faced a production setback. This is the
reason why the orders from these two countries have shifted to Bangladesh now.
They also said that the ready-made garnet units prompted the foreign buyers to
maintain a better health protocol, and hence a shift in the orders.
According to
Faruque Hassan, President, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters
Association (BGMEA), India has been affected by the coronavirus pandemic while
Myanmar is under military rule now, so the buyers of apparel goods have started
to shift some orders to Bangladesh. He also said that since Bangladesh is maintaining health and ethical
protocols in garment manufacturing units, it has been able to gain the
confidence of the buyers.
According to
Ahsan H Mansur, Executive Director, Policy Research Institute (PRI), many
factories have been closed in Myanmar now. The workers and logistical
facilitators have suspended their work there. He also said that due to the
covid scenario, the availability of workers and the logistical system has been
disturbed in India, so the production has also been affected to a great extent.
