Hydropower deal with VERBUND supports climate-neutral production goals

Specialty chemicals company LANXESS has taken a significant step towards lowering its carbon footprint by securing green electricity from VERBUND, Austria’s leading energy company and one of Europe’s largest hydropower producers. The two companies have signed a three-year agreement to supply sustainable electricity to LANXESS’ German production facilities from 2026 to 2028.

Under the agreement, VERBUND will provide around 200,000 MWh of electricity generated from existing hydroelectric power plants on the Inn River in Bavaria. The renewable power will be supplied to LANXESS’ sites in Bergkamen, Bitterfeld, Brunsbüttel, Mannheim and Wietmarschen. Compared to the average German electricity mix, the switch is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 60,000 tonnes, further lowering the environmental footprint of LANXESS’ operations and products.

Highlighting the importance of reliable renewable energy,  , Head of Energy Procurement, LANXESS, said, “Our production facilities operate 24/7, so we need electricity day and night. VERBUND’s hydropower plants can guarantee this. At the same time, they support us on our path to climate neutrality.”

VERBUND also underlined the growing importance of sustainable power for industry. Andreas Lanz, Center Manager Industrial Customers, VERBUND Energy4Business, said, “The growing demand for sustainable electricity is a clear trend and a prerequisite for greater climate protection, security of supply and reliability. With the VERBUND Climate Transition Plan… we are pursuing a science-based reduction path and supporting industrial companies in reducing their carbon footprint and achieving their climate goals with our green electricity solutions.”

The agreement aligns with LANXESS’ broader climate strategy, which targets climate-neutral production by 2040 and full value-chain climate neutrality by 2050. These goals have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative and recently reinforced by LANXESS’ inclusion in the CDP Climate A List for the seventh consecutive year.
