MoU aims to link textile waste recovery with government procurement.
The Government e Marketplace (GeM), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and the Textiles Committee, under the Ministry of Textiles, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote recycled and upcycled textile products through government procurement.
The partnership, announced during the 62nd Foundation Day celebrations of the Textiles Committee in Mumbai, aims to create a structured connection between textile waste generators, recyclers and upcyclers, and government buyers.
The initiative seeks to convert discarded textiles, production scraps and second-hand garments into usable and quality-assured products that can be offered to government institutions through the GeM platform.
By linking textile waste recovery with the scale of public procurement, the collaboration is expected to create a larger market for recycled and upcycled textile products while supporting circular economy practices in the sector.
The partnership also aims to shift the treatment of textile discards from waste disposal towards recovery, processing and value addition. This could help recyclers and upcyclers access institutional demand while encouraging more efficient use of textile resources.
The initiative is intended to strengthen the ecosystem for sustainable textiles by connecting waste recovery and product development with government purchasing channels.
