Heimtextil Trends 26/27, under the central theme “Craft is a Verb,” explores this dynamic tension, showing how technology and craftsmanship can collaborate to create new creative possibilities.

Artificial intelligence is reshaping design—precise, efficient, and omnipresent—yet the demand for handmade, intuitive, and irregular textures is growing. Heimtextil Trends 26/27, under the central theme “Craft is a Verb,” explores this dynamic tension, showing how technology and craftsmanship can collaborate to create new creative possibilities.

In partnership with the founders of Alcova, Heimtextil presents a trend landscape where tangible textures meet generative patterns and natural structures blend with algorithmic precision. This synergy gives rise to the techno-craftsman, who embraces AI as an extension of their toolkit rather than a competitor. The trends highlight how AI streamlines processes while maintaining the importance of human creativity, identity, and craftsmanship.

“Heimtextil Trends 26/27 illustrate how AI will transform the textile industry, and in combination with craftsmanship, open new creative perspectives,” says Olaf Schmidt, Vice President Textiles & Textile Technologies, Messe Frankfurt. “They provide insights for sustainable production, innovative collaborations, and future-ready business strategies.”

Alcova emphasizes the mindful use of AI in design, focusing on experimentation, unpredictability, and human inspiration. “We are drawn to objects and processes that provoke, surprise, and spark conversation,” says Valentina Ciuffi, Alcova. “Our focus is on projects that anticipate trends rather than chase them,” adds Joseph Grima, Alcova.

Six key trends at a glance

  1. Re:Media – Digital renderings of hand-drawn motifs are converted back into jacquards or hand-embroidered designs, showcasing the tension between media and glitch-inspired aesthetics.
  2. Visible Co-Work – AI generates designs completed by human hands, blurring the lines between code and craftsmanship. Examples include 3D knitted patchwork and digitally embroidered linens.
  3. Sensing Nature – Natural patterns are translated through algorithms into textile designs, from ocean textures to lichen growth motifs.
  4. A Playful Touch – Decorative details like ruffles, neon accents, and tassels add joy and humor to minimalist designs.
  5. Crafted Irregularity – Knots, asymmetrical finishes, and irregular dyeing highlight human craftsmanship over AI perfection.
  6. The Uncanny Valley – Wires, connections, and technical elements are displayed as design features, creating a strange, almost alien aesthetic.

Colour palette

Heimtextil Trends 26/27 balances earthy, natural tones—sand, clay, soot, olive, tree bark—with vibrant synthetic accents like acidic green, digital lilac, and bright screen blue, creating a visual tension that mirrors the interplay of AI and human touch.

Heimtextil Trends 26/27 offers a roadmap for the future of textile design, where artificial intelligence and craftsmanship coexist to inspire innovation, sustainability, and artistic expression.
