The technical/innovative textile sector has developed at a very high pace in recent years. In 2010, global production of textiles for technical applications and nonwovens amounted to 37 billion euros, rising to 60 billion euros for 2018.

The orders index for textile machinery for the period ranging from October to December 2018, as compiled by ACIMIT, the Association of Italian Textile Machinery Manufacturers, fell compared to the same period for 2017. The index value stood at 101.9 points (basis: 2015 =100).
Asia, and China in particular, represent the primary foreign markets for Italian machinery manufacturers in the sector.
This drop affected both the domestic and foreign markets. In Italy, the index stood at an absolute value of 141.4 basis points, i.e., 13 per cent less than for the period of April-June 2017.
CEMATEX, the European Committee of Textile Machinery Manufacturers, announced that ITMA will return to Milan, Italy, for its 19th edition. ITMA 2023 will be held at the Fiera Milano Rho exhibition centre from 8 to 14 June 2023.
