The allocation of this grant is seen as a crucial juncture for the department’s research and developmental pursuits within the realm of technical textiles

The Department of Textile Technology at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Jalandhar had been granted a significant sum of Rs 10 crore by the government of India’s Ministry of Textile, within the framework of the National Technical Textile Mission. The allocation of this grant was seen as a crucial juncture for the department’s research and developmental pursuits within the realm of technical textiles.

According to the project’s coordinators, Dr Vinay Midha and Dr A Mukhopadhyay, the National Technical Textile Mission represented an effort to encourage technical textiles and stimulate innovation in this sector within the Department of Textile Technology. They conveyed that the grant had been designed to facilitate advanced research, promote technological progress, and nurture talent within the field of technical textiles. The funds, as per their statement, would be utilised to establish cutting-edge research facilities, enhance laboratory infrastructure, and back collaborative initiatives aimed at addressing significant challenges in the technical textile industry.

The department held the belief that this financial infusion would empower them to venture into unexplored territories, create novel materials, and make a substantial contribution to the sector’s expansion. The Department of Textile Technology was the solitary department at NIT Jalandhar offering Textile programs amongst the 31 NITs. Their research spanned diverse domains of Technical Textiles, with a specific focus on areas like sport textiles, protective textiles, geotextiles, industrial textiles, and medical textiles.

Dr Sikka, who led the department, stated that the collaboration between the Ministry of Textile and the Department of Textile Technology at NIT Jalandhar held the potential to yield transformative outcomes.
