Lalitha emphasised that the textile industry is a major job provider, second only to agriculture in rural areas.

R Lalitha, Minister of Handlooms and Textiles for Tamil Nadu, inaugurated a textile marketing centre in Puthiyamputhur, a prominent hub for readymade garment industries in Thoothukudi, with Collector K Elambahavath, Ottapidaram MLA MC Shanmugaiah, and other officials in attendance.

During her visit, Lalitha held a consultation meeting with association members to discuss the establishment of a market on private land. She consulted with officials from relevant departments regarding available lands under the ‘meichal porambokke’ and HR&CE temple lands in Puthiyamputhur, as well as nearby villages such as Jambulingampuram and Saminatham. Lalitha also explored the possibility of implementing the project under the ‘Namakku Naame’ scheme, through the rural development and panchayat raj department.

Lalitha emphasised that the textile industry is a major job provider, second only to agriculture in rural areas. She highlighted Tamil Nadu’s significant contribution to the country’s textile production, including garments, readymade dresses, and home textiles. She also mentioned that the state had addressed the petition submitted by Ottapidaram MLA Shanmugaiah to the ‘Ungal Thoguthiyil Mudalamaichar’ scheme.

The officials, led by the Collector, along with Lalitha, toured the readymade garment units in the area, examining the manufacturing process, designs, raw material supply, distribution methods, and labor conditions, including wages. They also visited the land under HR&CE and other porambokke lands for the proposed textile marketing centre.

Among those present at the event were DRO S Ajay Seenivasan, Ottapidaram Panchayat Union Chairman L Ramesh, Madurai Regional Deputy Director of the Textile Department K Thiruvasagar, District Industrial Centre (DIC) General Manager Swarnalatha, Mahalir Thittam Project Director Malliga, and other officials.
