Malegaon’s
powerloom sector is on a revival spree because of the upcoming festival season,
with a steady demand for manufactured in the textile town.

Due to the
impact of the second wave of the pandemic, the powerloom sector of Malegaon was
adversely affected. Many units were forced to shut down due to the low demand
for the product along with the high cost of the material (yarn).

According to
Sajid Ansari, President, Powerloom Association in Malegaon, the powerloom
sector here is on a revival spree and over 75-80% powerlooms have started to
operate again in phases. This has allowed around 1.5 Lakh workers to return to
work.

The sector has
now been receiving orders from states like Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Mumbai
because there will be more demand for new clothes during the festive season.
The powerloom produces grey cloth from yarn like cotton and polyester and later
sell them to the traders. This cloth is then processed, printed, and dyed
before it is sent for stitching.

According to
Raees Ansari, the Powerloom owner, around 80 meters of grey cloth
is made by one powerloom unit. Many units are operating in two shifts, six days
a week, to ensure that the product is supplied in time. He also said that the
main concern is the high cost of yarn which furthers impacts the cost of the
final material.
