Kitex, a textile firm in Kerala, has been
accused of not installing a modern waste management plant in its bleaching and
dyeing unit. The firm has denied these accusations though.

The Kerala-based
textile factory owned by the Anna-Kitex group has been accused of polluting the
river Kadambrayar. The accusation has been raised by PT Thomas who is a member
of the Legislative Assembly from the Thrikkakara constituency. This accusation
has been denied by the company’s officials who have sent a legal notice to the
MLA to pay the company Rs 1 billion for putting up false accusations.

According to the
MLA, the Kizhakkambalam gram panchayat had issued a permit for the bleaching
and dyeing unit in October 2008 to the company. But the company has still not
installed a waste management unit to teat its effluents. He also said that this
is a violation of human rights.

PT Thomas
further said that the textile factory doesn’t have zero liquid discharge due to
which the contaminants could not be converted to solid waste. He also gave the
reference of the report by the Pollution Control Board, that the discharge from
the textile factory had 0.1 milligram of chromium per litre, which is three
times more than the prescribed limit. He also said that he doesn’t have any
personal issue with the firm and he doesn’t want Kitex to shut down.
