India’s apparel exports grow 1.6% in Apr–Jan despite global challenges
AEPC reports modest export growth amid global uncertainties.
India’s apparel exports recorded a modest growth of 1.6 per cent during April–January 2025–26, despite global headwinds, geopolitical uncertainties, and persistent supply chain disruptions, according to the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC).
AEPC Chairman A Sakthivel highlighted that exports to several major markets showed encouraging trends during the period. Among key destinations, Italy reported a 16 per cent increase in imports of Indian apparel, followed by Saudi Arabia at 18.5 per cent, the UAE at 10.6 per cent, Germany at 8.7 per cent, Spain at 7.1 per cent, and the UK at 4.8 per cent. Strong export performance was also observed in Japan, Iceland, and Australia, reflecting sustained demand across diverse international markets.
“Despite global headwinds, geopolitical uncertainties, and ongoing supply chain disruptions, the sector registered a moderate export growth of 1.6 per cent during April–January 2025–26 compared to the corresponding period of the previous financial year,” Sakthivel said.
The announcement coincided with AEPC’s 48th foundation day celebrations. Over the years, the council has consistently engaged with the government and industry stakeholders to promote and safeguard the interests of India’s ready-made garment (RMG) sector, while addressing key challenges faced by exporters.
Sakthivel also noted that several government initiatives are expected to accelerate the sector’s growth trajectory. These include PM MITRA Parks, the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme, Mega Textile Parks, the Export Promotion Mission, and the SAMARTH skilling programme. Additional measures such as promoting extra-long staple cotton cultivation, improving ease of doing business, enhancing credit access for MSMEs through expanded credit guarantee coverage, and establishing national centres of excellence for skill development are also anticipated to strengthen the industry.
Looking ahead, AEPC aims to expand the global footprint of Indian apparel exports by diversifying into new and non-traditional markets through targeted export promotion initiatives during 2026–27.
Industry impact: The 1.6 per cent export growth reflects resilience in India’s apparel sector despite global challenges, strengthening industry sentiment. It reinforces confidence in export-led expansion supported by Apparel Export Promotion Council initiatives and new market diversification.
