The minister emphasised the establishment of Pradhan Mantri Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel (PM MITRA) Parks in seven states across the country.
Piyush Goyal, Union Textile Minister, announced that India is at the forefront of sustainable textiles, which contribute to reducing the carbon footprint and promoting a circular economy. He made this statement while addressing the audience at the inaugural ceremony of the 69th India International Garment Fair (IIGF) in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh.
The minister emphasised the establishment of Pradhan Mantri Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel (PM MITRA) Parks in seven states across the country. The objective of these parks is to promote India’s textile sector significantly. Goyal stated that the PM MITRA Parks would decrease logistic costs by adopting a cluster-based approach to manufacturing and producing high-quality products with appropriate testing facilities. According to a press release from the Ministry of Textiles, he also mentioned that the strategic locations of the PM MITRA Parks would enable the units within them to effectively meet both domestic and export demands.
Goyal encouraged the industry to prioritise product quality and ensure compliance with quality standards through product testing. He also motivated young individuals to innovate and develop new technologies that would facilitate the production of superior-quality products. The minister expressed his belief that the IIGF should focus on enhancing quality and professionalism within the textile sector.
Furthermore, Goyal revealed that India is actively considering the possibility of entering into Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreements (CEPAs) and Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with various countries. He explained that these agreements aim to expand the market size and provide opportunities for exporters in the flourishing Indian textile sector. Goyal stated that by participating in these agreements, India seeks to explore new markets, boost exports, and create growth opportunities for the textile industry.
The minister praised the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) for organizing the IIGF and facilitating increased collaboration between the Indian textile industry and the rest of the world. He acknowledged the AEPC’s significant role in supporting the textile sector by generating livelihood opportunities, promoting new startups, and assisting micro and small textile units.
Goyal proposed organising the world’s largest garment fair in the National Capital Region to strengthen the trade fair ecosystem and engage industry professionals, entrepreneurs, and other stakeholders. The occasion was graced by the presence of Member of Parliament Gautam Buddha Nagar, Mahesh Sharma; Chairman of AEPC, Narendra Goenka; senior officials; and other dignitaries from India and abroad.
