The central government has decided to
introduce a four-year degree course in Indian Institutes of Handloom Technology
(IIHT) Odisha related to handloom and textile technology, said Piyush Goyal,
Union Minister of Textiles.
Bargarh is
regarded as the hub of handloom weaving in Odisha. According to Piyush Goyal,
it is feasible to introduce the degree courses in handloom and textile
technology, this is why the central government has decided to introduce this
course in IIHT Odisha, Bargarh.
As per
statistics, there are six Indian Institutes of Handloom Technology (IIHT)
including Salem (Tamil Nadu), Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh), Guwahati (Assam),
Jodhpur (Rajasthan), Fulia-Shantipur (West Bengal), and Bargarh (Odisha). These
fall under the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India.
The minister
also told that there are four other IIHTs that are run by the respective state
governments. These are at Venkatagiri (Andhra Pradesh), Champa (Chattisgarh),
Gadag-Betgeri (Karnataka), and Kannur (Kerala).
The information
on handloom courses which have their own nomenclatures and are run by the
private sector is not maintained by the central government. As per the count,
these six Central Government-run IIHTs have awarded around 340 students with
degrees, post diplomas, and diplomas. Companies are also invited by these
institutes for the placement of students. Many students get directly placed
with these companies and are recruited from the campus. This information was
given by Minister Goyal.
