Giriraj Singh backs new age fibres

Seminar highlights sustainable fibres for textile sector growth.

Union Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh inaugurated the national seminar on ‘New Age Fibres – Innovation, Research and the Road Ahead’ in New Delhi on 19 May 2026. The event focused on the role of sustainable fibres in India’s textile sector and future policy development.

The seminar was organised by the Ministry of Textiles through the National Jute Board and brought together policymakers, industry representatives, researchers, start-ups and academic institutions. Minister of State for Textiles Pabitra Margherita, Secretary, Ministry of Textiles Neelam Shami Rao and senior officials also attended the event.

Speaking at the seminar, Giriraj Singh said new age fibres could support sustainability goals, employment generation and the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. He also said regular virtual consultations would be held with stakeholders to monitor progress and support sector development.

The seminar focused on emerging fibres such as pineapple, flax, milkweed, bamboo, hemp, nettle, banana, ramie and kapok, which are being explored for their biodegradable and eco-friendly properties. Discussions highlighted their potential in sustainable textiles, agricultural diversification, rural livelihoods and value-added manufacturing.

The programme also included the inauguration of the New Age Fibres Expo, which showcased products and technologies based on natural fibres. A booklet on new age fibres and reports prepared by three task forces on fibre categories were also released during the inaugural session.

Joint Secretary (Fibre) Padmini Singla outlined global trends in sustainable materials and the rising demand for environmentally responsible textile solutions. Four thematic sessions were held, covering policy frameworks, commercialisation, technological challenges and long-term sectoral planning.
