The European Union (EU), which has provided Pakistan GSP Plus status, has proposed to work on a a five-year strategic partnership with that country.The textile industry in Pakistan contributes 8.5 per cent to GDP and 60 per cent to exports while employing 38 per cent of the workforce. The EU has provided Pakistan GSP Plus status. Pakistan wants brand owners of textiles from the EU to divert the bulk of their buying from Pakistan since it is well placed for the production and supply of high quality textile goods at attractive prices. Fighting poverty and helping the country on its path towards inclusive and sustainable growth are the aims of EU support to Pakistan. The EU considers that such goals will only be achieved by increasing political stability, improving the rule of law, bringing about human and social development, creating productive and decent work opportunities and diversifying the economy.

The recently concluded ITMA ASIA + CITME 2016 textile machinery exhibition, the largest showcase in the series since its launch in 2008, received a very strong response from visitors. By the end of the five-day show on 25 October, the fifth combined showcase registered a visitorship of over 100,000 from 102 countries and regions. About 20% of the visitors came from outside China.

The global yarn production increased in Q2/2016 quarter-on-quarter. Thereby, output in Asia, Europe and South America rose. On an annual basis, the global yarn production in Q2/2016 fell versus Q2/2015. Global yarn stocks fell in Q2/2016 quarter-on-quarter. Yarn stocks were reduced in Asia. In South America they increased. Year-on-year, global yarn stocks declined. Yarn orders in Europe fell quarter-on-quarter as well as year-on-year.

Global textile industry has never been as conscious for sustainability as it is today. Leading brands, NGOs, Governments and consumers are looking for innovative ideas and solutions for sustainability in textiles. Bangladesh has the largest apparel export industry in South Asia and, at 6.4 per cent, the largest market share of global apparel exports among South Asian countries. The apparel industry is extremely prominent in the country’s economy, accounting for 83 per cent of total exports.

The development of next generation swimsuits gets inspiration from beavers. A team of researchers from Cambridge-based Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the USA and visiting scientists from France took inspiration from semiaquatic rodent beavers to derive a mathematical model which could be used to develop swim suits and functional coating processes.
