Global warming and its impact on the environment is an ever-growing concern.

The increasing cost of fuel and electricity adds to the complexity, and directly affects not just industries but entire economies. Electric motors are estimated to account for about 48 per cent of the electrical energy consumed by industry.

Energy costs over the typical life cycle of a motor can be as high as 500 times the original capital cost of the motor. In the last two decades motor efficiency measurement standards have undergone extensive changes. At the same time, technological advances and greater end-user awareness have resulted in higher availability and application of energy efficient motors, particularly IE2 and IE3.

However in most continuous running plants, the installed base of motors is already over 10 years old, inefficient, oversized and operating on fluctuating load between 40 to 80 per cent without a Variable Frequency Drive. Rewound motors also cause a 10 to 15 per cent loss of power.

Bharat Bijlee, a front-runner in providing energy efficient motors and automation solutions, has now introduced – for the first time in India – its award winning range of SynchroVERT™ motors that conform to the Super Premium IE4 class of efficiency, which have much higher efficiency than IE2 or IE3.

With power tariff rate increasing over 5 per cent CAGR and considering motor life of 15 years, IE4 range motors have a payback period of less than a year, and the lifetime saving for a typical 15 kW motor is Rs 11.7 lakh for an incremental investment of Rs 0.5 lakh.

With such remarkably short payback periods, IE4 motors offer significant savings over IE2 and IE3 motors. These motors also do not need a Variable Frequency Drive for operation and can easily replace existing squirrel cage induction motors.

SynchroVERT™ was adjudged the ‘Most Innovative Energy Saving Product’ of the year at CII’s 17th National Award for Excellence in Energy Management 2016. Bharat Bijlee has also recently filed for a patent for the Line Start Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (LSPMSM) technology used in the design of SynchroVERT™.
