Dr Alan Hudd: Implementing our technology protects mills from tightening regulatory penalties

As textile manufacturers face mounting pressure to reduce water, energy use and emissions, digital processing technologies are emerging as a key pathway to cleaner production. Alchemie Technology is seeking to accelerate this shift through precision digital dyeing and finishing systems designed to replace conventional resource-intensive wet processing. Dr Alan Hudd, CEO and Founder, Alchemie Technology, in this interview with Divya Shetty, discusses how digital processing can reshape textile manufacturing, support sustainability goals and enable mills, including those in India, to become more competitive and resource-efficient.

Alchemie Technology is working on transforming conventional wet processing into digital, low-impact textile manufacturing. How are your technologies serving the dyeing, processing and finishing industry today?

Conventional textile wet processing is responsible for over 3 per cent of global CO2 emissions and a staggering 20 per cent of global industrial water pollution. Alchemie Technology is directly disrupting this status quo by replacing the traditional dye baths with high-precision digital fluid jetting systems. Our technologies, such as Endeavour™ digital dyeing system and the Novara digital precision finishing platform—shifts production from energy-intensive processes to clean, on-demand digital application. We are actively working with major global brands and manufacturing hubs across Europe and Asia to transition factories into modern, agile, and virtually waterless facilities that drastically reduce environmental impact without compromising on throughput or quality.

Traditional dyeing consumes large volumes of water and energy. How does your Endeavour digital dyeing system help mills reduce water use, wastewater discharge and carbon impact?

Traditional jet exhaust or bath dyeing requires submerging fabrics in dye baths that must be heated to temperatures up to 180°C, requiring heavy fossil-fuel energy. Our Endeavour™ system completely reimagines this process by delivering a low-water alternative that reduces water consumption by up to 95 per cent which by jetting dyes precisely where they are needed. Additionally, by electrifying the entire process, it also delivers up to an 85 per cent reduction in energy use. For a typical textile mill, replacing five traditional jet dye baths with a single Endeavour machine prevents millions of liters of toxic from entering local ecosystems while reducing the carbon footprint significantly.

Your technology focuses on applying dye with precision rather than immersing fabric in dye baths. How does this improve colour consistency, fabric quality and right-first-time production for textile processors?

In conventional dyeing, achieving colour consistency across a single roll—let alone multiple batches is incredibly difficult because dye exhaustion rates naturally fluctuate in a bath, Endeavour™ solves this by using our proprietary Jetronica non-contact nozzles to deliver millions of precise 10-micron droplets directly onto the fabric surface. This level of digital control ensures unmatched linear and edge-to-edge colour consistency. Furthermore, because the fabric is spared hours of harsh mechanical churning and high-temperature tumbling, fibre integrity is preserved, resulting in a superior hand-feel. To ensure seamless production, our Discovery™ lab system allows manufacturers to perfect colour recipes on small A5 samples first. This digital recipe data then transfers seamlessly to the Endeavour production line, eliminating colour errors before large-scale manufacturing begins.

Finishing is becoming increasingly important for performance textiles, apparel and home textiles. How does your Novara digital finishing platform help manufacturers apply chemicals more efficiently and only where required?

Traditional finishing pads the entire fabric through a chemical bath, oversaturating the material and wasting expensive chemistry. Our Novara completely changes the game by using a controlled vacuum and a specialized nozzle array to apply chemistry with millimetre resolution. With Novara, a mill can apply a water-repellent finish to the exterior of a performance garment and an anti-odour or moisture-wicking finish to the interior in a single pass. By applying chemistry only where it is functionally required, Novara uses, on average, 50 per cent less chemistry, 50 per cent less energy, and up to 66 per cent less water, creating massive cost savings on premium formulations like antimicrobial or barrier coatings.

Many textile processors are under pressure from global brands to meet stricter sustainability and compliance targets. How can Alchemie’s solutions support exporters and mills in meeting these expectations?

Global fashion brands are under intense pressure from consumers and tightening legislation, such as the EU’s bans on destroying unsold textiles and stricter ESG reporting mandates. Brands are mapping their Tier 2 supply chains and shifting orders to mills that can prove carbon and water reductions. Alchemie acts as a critical compliance enabler for exporters and mills looking to meet these aggressive targets. By integrating our digital platforms, manufacturers can immediately deliver the massive resource reductions that global brands are demanding, including up to 95 per cent less water and 85 per cent less energy. Implementing Alchemie technology protects mills from tightening regulatory penalties, elevates their standing as a preferred sustainable partner for top-tier apparel brands, and secures long-term market access in an increasingly green global economy.

How do digital dyeing and finishing technologies help reduce operational costs while improving flexibility, speed and production efficiency for textile manufacturers?

Sustainability doesn’t have to come at high cost or low quality, in fact, Alchemie delivers a 50 per cent reduction in operational expenditure. By slashing water procurement costs, energy bills, and wastewater treatment overheads, the machinery quickly pays for itself. From an efficiency standpoint, traditional colour changeovers require hours of draining, cleaning, and resetting massive dye vats. Endeavour™ and Novara operate on an on-demand architecture. Changing a colour or a finishing recipe is as simple as loading a new digital file. This allows manufacturers to profitably run any order length, from small bespoke fashion drops to high load production runs.

Looking at markets like India, where textile processing is modernising rapidly, what role can Alchemie Technology play in helping mills adopt cleaner, more resource-efficient dyeing and finishing practices?

India is one of the world’s most dynamic textile industries, but its manufacturing hubs are facing severe groundwater depletion and increasing energy prices. For Indian mills to scale their exports, clean modernisation is no longer optional—it is a survival mechanism. Alchemie is strategically positioned to drive the technology shift for India’s clean textile revolution. By implementing our technology, Indian manufacturers can bypass the massive capital expenditure normally required for expansive wastewater treatment plants. With our technologies, mills can comfortably operate and expand even in water-stressed regions. Alchemie provides Indian manufacturers with the ability to dramatically lower their production costs per meter while offering the low-carbon manufacturing at the same time.
