AI is transforming India’s Rs 1.2 trillion textile industry by boosting efficiency and reducing waste by up to 30 per cent, with adoption growing at 40 per cent annually. Key applications include AI-powered fabric inspection, automated design, and predictive maintenance, which reduce costs and enable MSMEs to improve production quality and speed. It further enables fabric sellers, designers, and manufacturers to visualize finished garments from raw fabric, automate product catalog creation, and reach buyers digitally at scale. Tools like StitchMagic — used by 5,000+ Indian textile businesses — reduce the time from fabric inventory to digital catalog from days to minutes. By 2027, AI-powered tools are projected to add Rs 1.2 trillion in incremental value to India’s textile sector through efficiency gains and expanded market access.

AI is already changing India’s Textile Sector in Fabric Visualization: Showing the Finished Product,  AI-Powered Product Photography, Automated Catalog Creation, Design Intelligence: Trend Prediction, Quality Control with Computer Vision and  Supply Chain & Inventory Optimization.

The Global Trend, demands for man-made (MMF) textiles is dominating whereby global textile fibre consumption with MMF 72 per cent against 28 per cent natural fibre. This change has encouraged the possibilities of innovation at every stage of the textile process viz. fibre, yarn, fabric & fashion stage, leading to disruptive technology in the modus operandi of textile process when compared with a smooth flow of process followed by Cotton textile manufacturing. Thus the control through human intervention becomes very difficult and so the importance of AI application comes into picture. ITAMMA the Oldest and Largest Textile Engineering Association has always being with the changing global technological trends and has also transformed digitally, realized the importance of AI awareness and knowledge for its members.  Accordingly ITAMMA jointly with SITRA and with the support of MSME has announced an International Conference on “AI –A Friend & Not Enemy of Textile Industry “scheduled at Coimbatore on 25^th Sept 26 at Coimbatore. The conference will address Why to apply AI? When to apply AI? Where to apply AI? What to apply in AI? How to apply AI?

International Speakers proposed from MAS Holdings (Srilanka), SMARTEX.AI (Portugal) will speak on ‘AI- Contribution in the Textile Industry Globally’ which will be supported by Keynote addresses by Dr Sridhar Chitraju, Director, Chief Technology Officer Center of Excellence (CTO CoE), Kyndryl (former IBM). While Senior authorities are invited from  Raymond Lifestyle, Krios Global (Daga Group – Import & Export Division), TT, KPR Mill, Arvind to share their experience of implementation of AI in their Textile Mills. On the R & D stream, SITRA & other Academia’s from KCT, PSG, and SVPIT textile institutes will inform their initiatives in AI at Pilot-Plant and Production implementation level.  

 We will register 250+ delegates including higher authorities from Textile Mills machinery and component manufacturing factories of Southern India as well as Academia. The attendees can hear from government officials’ viz., Textile Minister, Secretary and Jt. Secretary of MSME about their initiatives in the subject.

Further plan of action is to take forward this event as the technological base for start-ups and our members in the textile engineering industry to explore/scout Business opportunities for JVs/technology transfer arrangements.
