Fraunhofer IZM and Weissensee Kunsthochschule have opened an e-textile lab in
Berlin in collaboration. The entire laboratory can be used for interfaces
between textiles and electronics to test process chains. The designers can use
a prototyping kit that includes a series of LEDs, sensors, and electronic
modules developed at Fraunhofer IZM. These modules are both handmade and
machine-made. The collaboration has produced developments that combine both art
and research.
According to
Malte Von Krshiwoblozki, Provider of scientific support, Fraunhofer IZM, the
workstations and meeting areas are attractive for joint project work. He also
said that the machinery offers a wide range for interested parties and cited an
example saying that the ‘sewing and embroidery’ work area has sewing machines
as well as a computer-controlled embroidery machine. Another similar area of
the lab has “Cutting & Separating†with a laser cutter, laminators,
printers, a soldering station, and a cutting plotter.

Krshiwoblozki added that, the textile bonder can be used in cooperative
projects of the Textile Prototyping Lab for durable electronic textiles and the
modules of the prototyping kit are designed in such a way that they are
versatile and can integrate technology. He said that the team of Fraunhofer IZM
can provide technical ideas to the artists in case of textile projects so that
the artists’ ideas can be supported by new technology.
