The apparel
exporters in Noida are experiencing a comeback of the export orders as the
western nations are slowly opening up after the effects of the pandemic. Noida
has around 3,000 apparel manufacturing units. According to Lalit Thukral,
President, Noida Apparel Exporters Cluster, the orders from multinational
clothing retailers like H&M, M&S, Zara, and a lot of US apparel
importers have been received by the manufacturing units in Noida. Earlier
international buyers had moved 10 to 15% of the orders to other countries but
these orders are back as the international buyers are gaining confidence with
the restrictions easing in India. He also said that the markets of Europe and
the US have opened up as the citizens of these countries are getting vaccinated
and the sales are growing up. So, the countries need more stock and with the
situations improving in India, the buyers are confident that they can also meet
the targets.
In other export hubs of India like Tamil Nadu and
Karnataka, the factories were not allowed to function but in Uttar Pradesh the
operations were on. There was a shortage of labour as many workers had gone
back to their hometowns due to the spread of coronavirus. This led to a shift
of the buyers from the US and Europe to countries like Bangladesh and Vietnam
for the orders, as they were of the opinion that Indian manufacturers would not
be able to meet the targets. But, some of the buyers have returned now and the
units are all geared up to complete the orders.
Noida, ‘town of
export excellence’, had a major share in the garment exports before the
pandemic. The exports went down last
year.
