Rashmi Verma is Secretary – Textiles, Ministry of Textiles under the Government of India. Verma, a 1982 batch IAS officer of Bihar cadre, took over the charge as the new Secretary, Ministry of Textiles from January 1, 2016. Earlier, she was the Special Secretary in the Department of Revenue in Ministry of Finance. Verma has a very rich, vast and varied experience at various key positions at the Centre and State level.

The number of facilities certified to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) kept on growing last year, from 3,663 facilities in 2014 to 3,814 facilities in 2015. GOTS is recognised worldwide as the leading processing standard for textiles made with organic fibres. GOTS certified facilities are now located in 68 (63 in 2014) countries around the world.
Indian defence sector is one of the largest consumers of technical textile products in the country, who in addition to a range of conventional technical textile products are consuming specialised functional textiles many of which are imported.
Textiles is India´s foremost manufacturing industry and has a significant impact on the economy since it contributes to industrial output, employment generation and the export earnings of the country. With contribution of about 14 per cent to the industrial production, 4 per cent to the GDP and 13 per cent to the country´s total export earnings, the industry provide direct employment to over 45 million people.
