In the last few years, more than 40 Karl Mayer sizing and warping machines have been installed in Ichalkaranji.

Ichalkaranji, popularly known as the ‘Manchester of Maharashtra’, is one of the prominent centres of the decentralised textile sector in India. Recent years have seen a phenomenal growth of the textile industry in Ichalkaranji with major investments in the latest technologies.

Ichalkaranji has over 10,000 shuttleless looms and the number is growing by the day and there is an immense potential in this textile hub to adopt Viscose, Modal and Excel fibres and process them to fabrics which are in ready demand, says Uday Khadilkar, Vice President – Birla Cellulose.

“Being based in Ichalkaranji has a lot of advantages and also some challenges. The availability of the latest state-of-the-art weaving machines, warping and sizing facilities, etc. augur well for large scale outsourcing. The biggest challenge though is that the present work culture and ethic, which is very mediocre and getting them to work on export based orders, faster turn-around-times gets very testing,” says Nikunj Bagdia, Managing Director, Ken Enterprises Pvt Ltd,

The art of textile making began to develop in the Stone Age. The first textile fabric was probably a nonwoven crude felt, made by compressing loose clumps of fleece from wild sheep. The second stage was invention of yarn which was extracted from various barks of various plants in accordance to their availability.

The inauguration of the Italian textile machinery training centre is slated for this month at DKTE´S (Textile & Engineering Institute of Ichalkaranji, India). Following the signing of an agreement roughly two years ago between the Association of Italian Textile Machinery Manufacturers (ACIMIT) and the DKTE´S Textile & Engineering Institute in Ichalkaranji in the district of Kolhapur.
