Monumental Khadi flag marks Republic Day with pride and patriotism.
The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), under the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, showcased the world’s largest Khadi national flag at Dhordo in the Rann of Kutch, Gujarat, to mark the 77th Republic Day. Set against the striking backdrop of the white salt desert, the monumental tricolor stood as a powerful symbol of national pride, self-reliance, and India’s rich cultural legacy rooted in Khadi.
The grand display drew large crowds and reflected the spirit of unity and patriotism. Khadi artisans from across the country participated virtually, saluting the massive tricolor through video messages. The flag was installed with full military honours by personnel of the Indian Army and the Border Security Force (BSF), who also paid their respects on the occasion. Adding to the emotional significance of the event, KVIC honoured Rajkumari, wife of martyr Sergeant Muralidhar of the Indian Army, recognising her sacrifice and service to the nation.
The programme was attended by senior officials and personnel of the Indian Army and BSF, representatives of the Gujarat government, KVIC officials, and Khadi artisans. As part of the Republic Day celebrations, equipment and toolkits were distributed to artisans in Gujarat under the Village Industries Development Scheme.
The event also coincided with the 25th anniversary of the 2001 Bhuj earthquake, highlighting Kutch’s resilience, reconstruction, and journey of development over the past two decades.
Speaking at the event, Shri Manoj Kumar, Chairman, Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), said,
“The grand display of the world’s largest Khadi tricolor in the Rann of Kutch on the auspicious occasion of the 77th Republic Day is a moment of immense pride for the Nation. This program is dedicated to the brave soldiers of ‘Operation Sindoor’. I attribute this historic achievement to the inspiring leadership of Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, under whose guidance the Khadi movement has attained new recognition at the national and international levels.”
The monumental Khadi tricolor, measuring 225 feet by 150 feet and weighing around 1,400 kg, was crafted from hand-spun and hand-woven Khadi cotton by 70 artisans over 49 days. Its display at the Rann of Kutch reaffirmed Khadi’s enduring relevance and its role in inspiring national consciousness and self-reliance.
