The world produces over 17 mt of knitted textiles and apparels annually, representing one third of the global textile market. Moreover, knit output is forecasted to grow by 25 per cent over the next 10 years, reaching more than 21 mt. Global players like GAP, Tommy Hilfiger, Nike International, Reebok, C&A, Migros, Woolworth, Guess, Fila, Tom Taylor, JC Penney, Fruit of the Loom, Bugle Boy, IZOD and Wal-Mart have opened their own offices in India to source knitwear products. The merchandise is varied, extending from undergarments and t-shirts to sportswear, lingerie and swim wear. In case of sportswear, swim wear, etc., warp knitted fabrics are used with a high content of elastane. This calls for suitable technology for handling the fabrics, especially for dyeing and finishing.

Rising disposable income, a shift towards urbanisation and the retail boom have given way to "look good feel good" attitude.
