Close to the market, from trader to producer
The continuous development of the portfolio makes Barnet to this day a reliable and flexible partner, always focused on the needs of the world markets
Since its foundation by William Barnet II in 1898, Barnet has traditionally been a classic trading company with a global network that has grown over decades. During this time, Barnet has continuously expanded its activities and markets and gradually developed into a manufacturing company.
Today, for example, the company produces short cut and staple fibres, but also recycled high-performance fibers and the patented antistatic yarn nega-stat. The traditional distribution of various fibres as well as industrial, textile and technical yarns is still a central part of Barnet’s business activities, as is the finishing of yarns.
The activity profile of the sales staff has also changed. While the main activity used to be almost exclusively the buying and selling of fibres, polymers and yarns, technical issues have increasingly come to the fore. Today, they closely accompany customers in the development process of new products, if required.
With constant internal quality control, material testing and close cooperation with research institutes in the textile field, Barnet offers reliable products and services. This can range from supplying standardised, tailor-made or newly defined specialties for high-end textile applications, to contract work, to being a partner for innovative developments.
The continuous development of the portfolio makes Barnet to this day a reliable and flexible partner, always focused on the needs of the world markets.
Recycling is in their DNA
Originating from a wool recycling company, Barnet has developed extensively over 125 years. Nevertheless, it was the idea of turning industrial wool scraps into a usable product that continues to shape the company today. Textile scraps and waste were and still are an important basis for the company’s business. Recycling processes have been optimized to the point where they are one of the company’s core competencies, while also forming the basis for an exceptional product portfolio.
“At Barnet, sustainability is not just a marketing tool, but our lived business model” This core statement impressively describes a mindset that has been embedded in the company since its foundation.
The intelligence of the material- Recognising opportunities and benefits
Barnet follows its belief that every material – be it prime, minimum grade or textile waste – has its own potential. The art is to recognise this potential, which is called the intelligence of the material, and to make the best use of it. Thanks to many years of experience, Barnet knows how to make the best use of it to produce high-quality first-class products or recyclates.
Performance and sustainability are not a contradiction
Recycled high-performance fibres can be a technical solution to improve product properties and at the same time an economical alternative to non-recycled fibres. Matched to its customers’ individual applications, Barnet can offer a suitable product in most cases.
Chuck Hall, President and Chief Executive Officer at William Barnet & Son, said “We firmly believe that sustainability is not at odds with technological sophistication or economic efficiency. With our many years of experience, we are now able to make recycling processes manageable and offer clearly defined products.”
In addition to spot lots, which are available depending on the market situation, the Spartanburg-based company offers clearly defined recycled fibregrades that are continuously available to customers. These have consistent properties in terms of length distribution, a clearly defined fibrecontent and are available with different degrees of crimp.
Ecoware: Another step towards more sustainability
Since 2022, the new ecoware brand has underlined the company’s focus on sustainability. ecoware products must meet certain clearly defined properties in order to satisfy the requirement for a sustainable product portfolio. Products with the ecoware lable meet at least one of the following criteria;
Bio-based: Reduction of fossil fuel-based products and increased use of products from sustainable raw material sources. Examples: Bio-polyester, viscose, bio-polyamide, PLA.
Open loop / recycling: Creating a second life or alternative application, by utilizing the remaining performance of a material. This can be done through mechanical, thermal or chemical processes. Examples: Para-aramid, HMPE, meta-aramid, OPAN, polyamide, carbon, polyester.
Back to nature: materials that degrade on their own under certain conditions within a certain period of time. Examples: Polyester, viscose, polyamide.
Nega-stat: An outstanding product made by Barnet
nega-stat adds an important component to individual protective equipment, such as work overalls on oil- or gas-platforms or heat- and fireproof suits worn by firefighters. By preventing a static charge that generates enough energy to cause a gas platform to explode in the course of a discharge or to ignite dusts in the vicinity of a fire, the corresponding overall protects not only the person wearing it, but also the immediate surroundings up to the complete industrial plant. Especially where grounding cannot be fully guaranteed, nega-stat is a great addition for more work safety. The patented yarn is therefore the defining standard in static dissipative yarns and exclusively produced by Barnet.
Barnet-carbon
With its carbon processing facilities in the USA and Europe, Barnet is now also a globally relevant supplier of chopped and oversized carbon fibres. Because the company also focuses primarily on individual customer requirements and sets standards in this area through various processing measures, the manufacturer’s carbon products now have a protected brand name.
barnet-carbon fibres are designed for low- and high-temperature thermoplastic compounding processes. Their chopped fibres are available in lengths from 3 mm to 25 mm and are an ideal solution for a variety of engineered plastics.
barnet-carbon provides an excellent combination of physical properties to increase mechanical strength with weight reduction. This leads to high strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight ratio, which creates higher tensile and compression strength to thermoplastic compounds.
In addition, barnet-carbon enhances electrical and thermal conductivity while having a high chemical resistance due to its chemical inertness.
barnet-carbon fibres are designed to distribute and disperse easily during compounding, while offering a consistent flow of material.
Solution providing
Barnet has made it its business worldwide to provide the right solution for all its customers’ wishes and requirements. This includes the sensible recycling of textile waste as well as technical support already in the development phase of a new product. The acceptance of slow movers and spot lots, for which possible applications can be found thanks to a network that has grown over decades, relieves the warehouses of the customers of the traditional company. The company’s many years of experience enable it to provide assistance and competent support wherever it is needed.
