In a first of its kind for Indian motor manufacturers, Bharat Bijlee is to supply traction motors to Chittranjan Locomotive Works (CLW) to be used in locomotive engines manufactured there. These 850 kW 6 pole 2180 V 65 Hz motors are designed to operate at a maximum of 3,250 RPM. Each locomotive will have six such direct traction AC motors, which have numerous advantages such as improved tractive effort, regenerative braking, microprocessor controls and less maintenance. The Prototype Motor was tested jointly by the Research Designs & Standards Organization (RDSO) and CLW.
