Rahul Mehta: India to get standardised apparel sizing as govt moves towards uniform clothing measurements

The development of standardised Indian apparel sizing is a significant step forward for our industry and consumers alike. CMAI has been closely associated with this initiative from the outset, working alongside NIFT and technical experts from leading apparel brands to help shape a sizing framework that reflects Indian body measurements. While this will bring greater consistency through standard S, M, L and XL measurements, it is important to recognise that brands will continue to retain some flexibility in fit, as each caters to different consumer preferences and product positioning.

One of the biggest advantages of this initiative will be its potential to reduce size-related product returns, particularly in e-commerce, where returns remain a major challenge. Standardized sizing will give consumers greater confidence while shopping, simplify purchase decisions, and improve the overall shopping experience. It will also help brands and retailers reduce costs associated with returns and exchanges.

Equally important, India now has an opportunity to establish its own sizing benchmarks instead of relying on international standards that often create confusion for consumers. As one of the world’s largest apparel markets, it is only natural that we develop measurement standards suited to Indian consumers.

The transition, however, will take time. Brands cannot switch overnight, as existing inventories, established sizing practices, and consumer familiarity all need to be considered. We expect the adoption to happen gradually, with many brands already beginning to align new collections with the recommended measurements. We strongly support this initiative and believe it will benefit the entire apparel value chain in the long run.

The view is presented by Rahul Mehta, Chief Mentor, Clothing Manufacturers Association of India.
