Work apace on BMC’s textile mill museum

The ambitious project of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to create a textile mill museum at the India United Mill located at Kalachowki, Mumbai, is picking up some pace. As of now, it’s not just the JJ School of Arts that would help the BMC to prepare a blueprint of the museum, but Nitin Desai, who will be involved. He has been involved to assist the municipal body for the project. A senior civic officer stated that Desai the art director has made a module of the museum.

The textile museum work is divided into three phases as the mill is spread over 10 acres of land. The India United Mills 2 and 3 have been sanctioned as heritage structures, while the entire plot has a heritage precinct. Currently, the plot has three rings and spinning structures, a chimney, a semi-automatic loom and a pond.

“What all should be made and how it should be presented to the tourist like the history of Mumbai mill workers, the traditional legacy, how the mill used to function, also the pond restoration which is present at the centre of the mill can be made the most attractive centre point of the museum and other amenities like the parking space to be made available for the visitors. A presentation regarding the same was made to the civic commissioner Ajoy Mehta in a meeting, which was held on October 3,” he added.
