The garment
makers in Bangladesh have requested the government to ease down the conditions
for the import of cotton, yarn, and other fabrics as Bangladesh has started to
receive orders from international retailers and brands.

According to
Faruque Hassan, president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters
Association (BGMEA), the country is receiving a lot of work orders from
international brands so the need for ready raw materials like yarn, cotton, and
fabrics has increased. He also mentioned that the quantity of work orders is so
high that the local raw materials suppliers are facing issues to ensure timely
supply of goods.  This situation made him
send a huge letter to Tipu Munshi, the Minister of Commerce. In the letter, he
has demanded the government to ease down the rules on the import of yarn from
India. He also asked the government should allow the import of fabrics, yarn,
and cotton through other land ports, mainly Bhomra and Sonamasjid.

According to
Mohammad Ali Khokon, President, Bangladesh Textile Mills Association, the import
of yarn is not possible without a bond. He also said that if all ports are
opened up, the local industry will face challenges and the government will also
lose a lot of revenue. He added that the import of yarn without bond is a very
dangerous situation for the local industry but the garment manufacturers are
demanding that.
