Bangladesh
should sanction ILO Convention 190 to eliminate workplace violence, said
speakers at the recently held webinar. Consent of employers, workers, and civil
society can be taken for the endorsement.
According to
Humaira Aziz, Director, CARE Bangladesh, 61.7% women workers experience
harassment of different types at workplace. She further said that sexual
harassment by male workers is the most common. Also, around 20% female workers
have either left or switched their jobs due to the unfavourable behaviour of
the management. Ms Aziz also stated that Bangladesh has ratified 33 ILO
Conventions so far, which also includes seven fundamental conventions.
The need of the
hour is that Bangladesh should amend or include some provisions in the existing
labour and workplace safety-related laws and rules.
According to
Faruque Hassan, President, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters
Association, the garment industry is the most advanced amongst all sectors in
the country, so other industries that need further improvement in work
conditions should be focused while considering ratifying the ILO Convention
190.
According to Dr
Atiur Rahman, UnSy Chairperson and Former Central Bank Governor, a roadmap
should be created to set a time to ratify the ILO Convention 190 by taking opinion from
stakeholders. He also added that the sectors should be made aware of their
position and condition in global competition when improvement in workspace
safety is concerned.
