Surat-based
textile associations met Ajay Tomar, the City Police Commissioner, in two
groups to request for relaxation in the lockdown measures. Requests made by
both the groups were denied by the commissioner.
The first group
comprising the Federation of Surat Textile Traders Association (FOSTTA) members
asked for the shops to be open for few hours every day to complete
banking-related work. They did not demand the markets to be open for business.
The second group
consisted of a Textile Task Force and the representatives of Southern Gujarat
Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI), the Federation of Gujarat Weavers
Association (FOGWA), Surat Mercantile Association (SMA) and South Gujarat
Textile Processors’ Association (SGTPA). They demanded that the markets be
allowed to function only for business-to-business (B2B) transactions from 10 am
to 4 pm every day or at least on odd or even days.
After their
demands were denied by the city police commissioner, Dinesh Navadiya,
President, SGCCI said that the Textile Task Force just wants B2B transactions
while they respect the restrictions on retail transactions. The team is
planning to meet ministers and MLAs with the same request.
The state
government has extended the lockdown
restrictions till May 12, to contain the spread of the second
wave of COVID-19.
