In the wake of Covid-19 second wave and the possibility of another lockdown, Tiruppur textile exporters are worried that they may fail to complete their export orders in time. After a slump in production and export last year due to the pandemic, the Indian textile industry has been showing signs of revival in the past few months. Since the reports of forced labour in Chinese textile industries surfaced, many Western countries have moved to Indian players.
According to Prabhu Dhamodharan, Convenor, Indian Texpreneurs Federation, there is a high demand for apparel and home textiles in the US. Besides, the fact that the UK is opening its retail sector is good news for the Indian textile industry. He further added that the rising COVID cases in the country and the threat of another lockdown are major concerns for the industry.
T Kannan, Chairman and Managing Director, Thiagarajar Mills, said that the industry needs the government’s support to complete existing export orders and accept new orders.
The Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) has already written to the chief minister and cabinet ministers of various states for support in continuous manufacturing without interruptions.
A Sakthivel, Chairman, AEPC, is said to have written to Amit Shah, Union Home Minister, that a full lockdown at this point will bring down the hard work put together by the Indian export sector in getting back on the global map.
