SVPITM organises series of workshops on TT

The Department of Handlooms and Textiles, Government of Tamil Nadu and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International School of Textiles and Management (SVPITM) have jointly organised a series of workshops in technical textiles. As part of the series of workshops, a Sectorial Programme – 2 on industrial and packaging textiles were scheduled on May 3-6, 2018. A total of 80 participants from various districts of Tamil Nadu were part of the proceeding. The participants are undergoing, both theoretical and practical training on their respective sector, which includes industrial visits. It comprises of sessions on packaging, manufacturing, technology, machines, standards, market demand and marketing strategy.

As part of the inauguration of the workshop, Anitha, Assistant Professor, SVPITM, welcomed the participants and guests. Mohanraj, Head-Textiles, SVPITM, briefed the gathering on the various events that are planned as part of the programme. The presidential address was given by Dr C Rameshkumar, Director, SVPITM.

The guests for the inaugural function were, Dr A Venkatachalam, Dean, Department of Textiles Technology, Bannari Amman Institute of Technology, Sathyamangalam and Dr G Thilagavathi, Head – Department of Textile Technolgy, PSGTECH’s COE INDUTECH, Coimbatore.

Dr A Venkatachalam emphasised on the importance of packaging textiles in India. The participants should focus on gaining knowledge about market before entering into the industry, various survey techniques can be used for this. He also stated that the technical textiles is a disruptive technology since it is new and has the capability to replace conventional textiles. He concluded his speech by stating the importance of three factors of sustainability that an entrepreneur should be responsible for they are economic, social and environmental.

Dr G Thilagavathi, stated that this was the right time to venture into technical textiles. She stressed on manufacturing and creating uniqueness in new technical textile products. With uniqueness comes identity in the market. She highlighted on the usage of natural fibers for specific application. She also talked about the various facilities and products developed in Center of Excellence, PSG, INDUTECH.
