Textile SIT renamed to New Cloth Market division
The New Cloth Market wing will entertain complaints from all five textiles associations and any individual directly affected by a textile industry cheating case.
The special investigation team (SIT) for the textile sector, established in 2020, has undergone a name change to the ‘New Cloth Market wing’ and has been placed under the economic offences wing (EOW) of the city crime branch. Textile traders in the city are now permitted to file complaints with the New Cloth Market wing. Formerly, the SIT operated within Sector 2, restricting access to traders within this police jurisdiction.
Concerns about this limitation were brought to the attention of Ahmedabad city police commissioner G S Malik by textile traders. In response, the commissioner issued a notification addressing the matter. According to the notification, the textile SIT will be officially known as the New Cloth Market wing (NCM wing) and will function under the EOW. The DCP of EOW will appoint a police inspector to oversee the wing, monitoring its activities and reviewing offenses and applications every two weeks.
Bharti Pandya, DCP of EOW, explained, “The New Cloth Market wing will entertain complaints from all five textiles associations and any individual directly affected by a textile industry cheating case. C B Gamit has been appointed as the police inspector of the NCM wing, along with 11 other personnel. The NCM wing will operate in accordance with the standard operating procedure.”
The textile SIT, established in 2020 to address cheating and fraud cases involving textile traders, has played a role in helping traders recover funds from other states. A representative of a textile association noted, “The textile SIT has facilitated the retrieval of money from various states. The textile business, which often involves offering credit periods, has been susceptible to fraud, with many deceiving traders. With the broadened jurisdiction, the NCM wing will now assist all textile traders and manufacturers facing such issues.”
