Tamil Nadu textile industry has reacted positively to the increase in budgetary allocation to the sector at Rs 7,140 crore but insists that concerns over pending funds under various schemes and erosion of pre-GST incentives still hurt the industry.

The Government of Maharashtra plans to introduce a new textile policy in the next two months. The aim is to attract entrepreneurs in the entire value chain, besides seeing that existing unit do not migrate to other major cotton-growing States.

The knitwear sector of India will get a special package in about two months’ time, according to a government official. The industry can expect the package to ensure a level-playing field, considering it faces tough competition from various countries like China due to lack of technology upgrades.

The fiscal incentives in the package, which is expected to cost the ex-chequer an estimated Rs 6,000 crore, include enhanced duty drawback coverage with refund of State levies not being compensated so far, additional funding under the Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (TUFS) and enhanced scope of income tax exemption under Section 80JJAA of the Income Tax Act.
