India is the second largest producer of man-made fibres (MMF) in the world with presence of large plants having state-of-the art technology. MMF textiles constitute almost two-third of the domestic textile market. However, India´s share in global exports of value -added textiles of MMF is miniscule.

Coimbatore district, known as the textile hub of Tamil Nadu or is called as the ´Manchester of South India´, has over 900 textile mills, 7 million spindles, 1 lakh rotors, 2 lakh powerlooms, 99,000 automatic shuttle looms, 59,000 plain looms, 39,000 semi-automatic looms, and over 70 per cent of machinery, spares & accessories, rotors, etc.
Acche Din´ for the Indian textile industry seemed to have come true, when the curtains came down after lively presentations and debates addressing an audience of over 400 on the second day of the 8th Asian Textile Conference (Atexcon), organised recently by the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI) at the Westin Hotel in Mumbai.
